The Quetzalcóatl Hike: Amatlán and the Inverted Pyramid

  • Feb 20
  • 2 min read

On Friday, March 6, the final day of Portal Gathering, we are walking into the mountains of Amatlán. This area is the traditional birthplace of Quetzalcóatl, the Feathered Serpent.

Representations of this deity date back to the Teotihuacán civilization (3rd to 8th century CE), where the serpent was tied to the earth, water, and the cycles of vegetation.

We are walking with Los Guías de Guadalupe, three certified local guides who grew up in these mountains. The trek begins in the center of Amatlán at the feathered serpent monument and leads to the ancient inverted pyramid and the Pozo de Quetzalcóatl.

The Inverted Pyramid

Unlike the upward-facing Tepozteco pyramid, this structure is built into the ground and framed by the surrounding peaks. It has been used for centuries as a site for ceremony and focused energy.

The Pool

The Pozo of Quetzalcóatl is a sacred water hole set in the woods. While most water sources in these mountains dry up during the six-month dry season, this pool holds water year-round. We will spend time at the water before returning.

Logistics

  • Timing: Meet Friday morning in the Amatlán town center at the Quetzalcóatl monument; all the details will be provided to you before the hike.

  • Duration: The total time of the hike is expected to be 5 hours. Expect two hours of hiking in each direction, depending on the group's pace.

  • Preparation: This is a mountain trail. Wear shoes with grip. Bring your own water and snacks; there are no vendors on the track.

Registration

This hike is managed as a workshop. Sign-up is required to maintain a functional group size with the guides.

The times on this registration page are not the times of the workshops. Please check the finalized workshop schedule for details.

Friday Night Gathering

After the hike, you will return to town with plenty of time before the afterparty. Friday evening, we are meeting at the staff house—a 15-minute walk from the Las Palmas venue—to close the week and mark a sponsor's birthday.

The evening is simple: food, drinks, and some live music with guitar and saxophone. Directions will be provided at the event.

If this walk and the history of this land speak to you, register while there are spots left.
